Inspired with such aspects as the dumbing down of culture and the technological displacement of human knowledge and skill, I imagine a made up world called ‘Gr8 Britan’ where misguided, corrupted and dislocated societies reside. These fictional societies who are trying to recreate a lost cultural heritage by creating artefacts inform the making and work processes of the artworks. In doing so, warped historical iconography of power, religion and nationhood become imbued with strange ancient-like mysticism and sacred symbolism. As a satirical critique of contemporary culture in which identity is so important, the work often reflects on the myths of national heritage, human nature and the process of painting itself that draws on the whole history of visual imagery, whilst also fulfilling the needs and wants of these imaginary people.
